Fuck Planes. Long Live Trains

Dec 30, 2024

In my town and around it, there are no trains.

Well, I can’t exactly know that. They may be hobbyists with scale trains.

The nearest train station is more than an hour away, and it’s a minor Amtrak station if it counts as one at all. I don’t think I could get there without a car.

We do have an airport for general aviation. I don’t have any chance of affording a plane in my current financial situation, but I suspect I could ride my electric bike right up to it.

I hate general aviation. It’s loud, it wastes a lot of fossil fuels that could be used more efficiently and every single year dunces with iPads fail to check the weather on their flight path. Or they refuse to take an alternate landing path in bad weather or similar. Often these pilots take their families with them.

In the US, commercial passenger plane pilots have to have 1500 hours of flight time before they’re allowed to take passengers. I think we should do the same to general aviation pilots. Regulations should be so stringent that you can’t become a pilot and kill your family with a private rating in a small aircraft. We could have something like a quasi-airline where the FAA actually engages in supervision of inspections, puts pilots through constant training etc. Take the money from charging pilots to be part of the club and put it toward trains.
